How Skimmers Capture Surface Debris
The pool skimmer works by exploiting the principle of surface tension. As the pool pump draws water from the skimmer opening, a gentle current is created across the surface of the pool. This current pulls the thin film of water, along pool cleaner with floating debris such as leaves, grass clippings, insects, and sunscreen oils, into the skimmer's main opening. Inside the skimmer, the water passes through a removable skimmer basket. This basket is designed with a coarse mesh to trap the larger solids, protecting the pool's circulation pump and main filter from becoming clogged. The water, now free of large debris, then continues on to the main filtration system.
Skimmer Components and Operation
A key feature of the skimmer is the weir door, a hinged flap located at the entrance. This door serves two main purposes. First, it regulates the flow of water into the skimmer, ensuring that the suction is concentrated on the immediate surface layer. Second, and equally important, when the pump turns off or when waves push water back, the weir door closes. This action prevents the debris that has already been collected in the basket from floating back out into the pool. Proper water level is critical for optimal skimmer performance; the water should typically be about halfway up the skimmer mouth to ensure the weir door can function correctly and to prevent the pump from drawing in air.

A properly functioning skimmer is paramount for maintaining superior pool water quality. By removing organic debris like leaves and bugs before they decompose, skimmers prevent these materials from leaching nutrients into the water, which could otherwise fuel algae growth and alter the chemical balance. Furthermore, by protecting the main pool pump and filter from large foreign objects, the skimmer contributes to the longevity and efficient operation of the entire pool system.
